Why Green

"If civilization has risen from the Stone Age, it can rise again from the Wastepaper Age."
~Jacques Barzun, The House of Intellect, 1959

Why China is a green place to be:
A consultant from Go Green Initiative explains after his trip to China that China is a very enviromentally conscious country. He also states ten major ways China is making an effort to become eviromentally friendly. One way China is conserving electricity is by using clean energy through nuclear power plants. He states, "More nuclear power plants will create a clean energy source that will fuel China’s growing economy without  depleting natural resources, or creating air pollution." China's plan for becoming an all green country is that the installed capacity of nuclear power will be at 40 million kilowatts in 2020 and the "capacity under construction in 2020 will reach 18 million kilowatts."
The consultant says another way China is a green place to be is because, "I saw numerous billboards encouraging consumers to use compact fluorescent light bulbs to conserve electricity." "According to data released by the NDRC on Dec. 11, 2007, China was the largest producer and user of solar water heaters in the world by the end of 2006," states the article, The Jade Dragon. The consultant says in the article, The Jade Dragon, "Though there are many traffic jams in China, there is clear evidence that investment in mass transit infrastructure is a top priority. In Shanghai, there is a subway, monorail, a variety of mass transit ground options, and my personal favorite: the Maglev– magnetic levitation train. It is the fastest train in the world, and it uses zero fuel, therefore creating zero emissions."
Energy conservation in hotels is also being used as electricity use in the rooms can only be turned on when the card to the room is slid through the keyhole and turns off every time the guest leaves the room. So even people who forget to turn off all the lights when they are gone conserve kilowatts of electricity. Hotels also show in at least five different languages signs of promoting conserving water and electricity.  Shopping areas conserve electricity by using motion activated esculaters that are not constantly running when not in use.
According to Green Inititive's consultant all the toilets in China are low flush and the faucets turn off on their own when not in use. Another way China has decided to take a step into being a greener country is using a hot water switch. You turn on the switch and wait half an hour for water to heat up. This saves much gas as water is not having to be constantly heated. It is almost like how we don’t keep our ovens constantly running to save gas and electricity. We have to preheat them. The Chinese do this with their water instead of keeping it constantly hot.
There are also numerous recycling bins everywhere in China and in Shanghai, a city of 20 million people, the benches have signs promoting recycling as well. China also has a"Bottle Bills" program where used plastic water bottles have value when recycled encouraging people to recycle them. The author remarks, "Mass transit systems that will use clean energy are being built everywhere. Despite temperatures in the 30’s Fahrenheit, commuters used bikes and scooters everywhere. And the size and fuel efficiency of new cars in China was remarkable. The personal vehicle products I saw all over China are not available in the U.S. There were luxury vehicles and minivans all around, but they were smaller and more fuel efficient than commiserate products in America," about China. "However, in both government-owned and private enterprises, I saw convincing evidence that conservation is a front-burner issue in China," is the conclusion that China is very much a green place to be.

Why This is the Greenest Trip Yet:
You now know that China is very aware of the importance in our environment and is taking action. This trip to China is not only in an environmentally friendly location but will be green all the way as well.
The first step is getting there. The airlines I've chosen are Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines. These airlines use less fuel and are rated as one of the top fuel efficient airlines around the world! One of the hotels that I will be staying in on this trip to China is the Tibet Hotel in Chengdu and is classified as an all green and environmentally friendly hotel. When also in Chengdu and traveling to a Jiuzhaigou Valley Hike the transportation buses there are classified as all green. Perhaps because they may use less emmisions. When traveling by train this saves much gas and I will be taking trains on this trip to travel from Chengdu, Xian, and Beijing. Because there are tours with other people involved, taking a tour bus with a whole bunch of people instead of seperate cars for each person conserves much gas and oil as well. When doing the bike hike, this lets out no carbon emissions at all and brings you in one with nature.Going on hikes also brings you in tune with nature and requires letting out no emissions.
During the last few days of the trip, I will be staying with a local family and instead of having to drive out for certain activities I will be able to do some such as taking cooking classes and art classes in the home of the locals. This is an all green trip and is the greenest around! No other trup like it! Come on this trip to China, take a deep breathe, and enjoy the modern day technology along with nature...while discovering the Chinese in you!
